Xbox 360 will connect to internet but not xbox live. why?

So I checked my subscription to Xbox Live Gold membership and it's good for another three months. I use a wireless connection and even if I shut off the modem and then turn it back on it still wont' connect. It goes halfway on the bar for xbox live and then stops and says it can't connect. How do I fix this?
