Getting into music production?
All you really need is GOOD EAR for music. A producer will take a song and MOLD it into his own production style. The best advice I could give you is to work with as many artists as you can (they do not have to be well-known for you to gain experience). Try getting any kind of job at a radio station or recording studio (even if you start out sweeping the floors for free) as this will give you the open door you need to learn how to use the different mixing boards and recording software. Eventually, you will develope your own producing style. Every great producer has their own "sound" stamp they put on any recording they produce. Example: listen to the sonics and production of songs like 'Free Fallin'' and 'I Won't Back Down' by Tom Petty and compare them to anything by ELO or Traveling Wilburys and you will "hear" some of the same sonics in each production as they were all produced by Jeff Lynne (who is a genius). Learn room acoustics. Acoustics in the room make all the difference. Listen to Jeff Lynne's own solo album 'Armchair Theatre'. he recorded it in his home which has recording "jacks" set up in every single room of his house. Each room giving the song it's own unique varible. Likewise, listen to your favorite band and see who their producer is and then listen to other artists produced by the same person and you'll notice how each producer has their own unique style. You can take classes for producing, but ONLY experience will get you jobs! So start experiencing music. A producer can hear a hit song in normal everyday sounds; if they're really good. :) Good luck and fun!
